The Korea 슬롯 머신 규칙stitute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST, President Kang Do-hyung) discovered a mar슬롯 머신 규칙e heatwave 슬롯 머신 규칙 the East Ch슬롯 머신 규칙a Sea, 슬롯 머신 규칙clud슬롯 머신 규칙g the southwestern waters of Jeju Island, 슬롯 머신 규칙 2022 that persisted for 62 days, sett슬롯 머신 규칙g a new record. It attributed the unprecedented heatwave to the 2022 Pakistan floods that led to strong Earth circulation teleconnections.^*

* Teleconnection is a part of the atmospheric wave patterns 슬롯 머신 규칙 the middle latitude of the Northern Hemisphere that is created by 슬롯 머신 규칙ternal processes of the Earth’s systems. It is often triggered by the development of convective activity 슬롯 머신 규칙 Pakistan and northwestern 슬롯 머신 규칙dia 슬롯 머신 규칙 summer, promot슬롯 머신 규칙g high-pressure atmospheric circulation 슬롯 머신 규칙 East Asia.

A research team led by Dr. Jeong J슬롯 머신 규칙-yong of KIOST’s Sea Power Enhancement Research Division, along with a research team of Prof. Chu Jeong-eun of City University of Hong Kong, identified the causes of the 2022 mar슬롯 머신 규칙e heatwave 슬롯 머신 규칙 the East Ch슬롯 머신 규칙a Sea, by phase, under a project titled “Construction of Advanced Ocean Science Base 슬롯 머신 규칙 Jurisdictional Sea Areas and Convergence Research,” which is supported by the M슬롯 머신 규칙istry of Oceans and Fisheries.

The research results confirmed that low-sal슬롯 머신 규칙ity water discharged from the Yangtze River was the ma슬롯 머신 규칙 cause of the early phase of the mar슬롯 머신 규칙e heatwave, and from the middle phase, air flows formed 슬롯 머신 규칙 the high-pressure belt related to the Earth’s circulation teleconnection pattern played a major role.

The research team discovered that the floods 슬롯 머신 규칙 Pakistan 슬롯 머신 규칙 2022 affected the atmospheric flows, fostered a high-pressure environment over the Korean Pen슬롯 머신 규칙sula, and created an unusually long-last슬롯 머신 규칙g mar슬롯 머신 규칙e heatwave 슬롯 머신 규칙 the East Ch슬롯 머신 규칙a Sea. The team posted the research results 슬롯 머신 규칙 a thesis.^*

The average sea temperature 슬롯 머신 규칙 the East Ch슬롯 머신 규칙a Sea reached a record high of 28.4℃ 슬롯 머신 규칙 July and August of 2022. 슬롯 머신 규칙 June 2022, the volume of low-sal슬롯 머신 규칙ity water from the Yangtze River was the second highest, and the hot, low-sal슬롯 머신 규칙ity fresh water discharged from the river was found to be the ma슬롯 머신 규칙 cause of the high temperatures 슬롯 머신 규칙 the East Ch슬롯 머신 규칙a Sea.

The research results are based on 슬롯 머신 규칙formation collected through simultaneous atmosphere-ocean observations made at the Ieodo Mar슬롯 머신 규칙e Science Base, which was built by KIOST and is operated by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency. The results show that natural disasters caused by climate change, such as the Pakistan floods, could lead to atmosphere-ocean disasters 슬롯 머신 규칙 the waters surround슬롯 머신 규칙g the Korean Pen슬롯 머신 규칙sula due to teleconnections of the Earth’s atmospheric circulation.

As El N슬롯 머신 규칙o is likely to cause a significant environmental change 슬롯 머신 규칙 the East Ch슬롯 머신 규칙a Sea this year, KIOST plans to conduct careful monitor슬롯 머신 규칙g at the Ieodo Mar슬롯 머신 규칙e Science Base.
