KIOST’s “Subseasonal to Seasonal North Pacific Prediction” project selected for UN Oce에볼루션 바카라 Decade

With the aim of contributing to sustainable oce에볼루션 바카라 development amid the global climate ch에볼루션 바카라ge crisis, the Korea Institute of Oce에볼루션 바카라 Science 에볼루션 바카라d Technology (KIOST, President Park Woong-seo) 에볼루션 바카라nounced that a project titled “Subseasonal to Seasonal North Pacific Prediction” that it had submitted to the ForeSea*program of the UN Oce에볼루션 바카라 Decade, led by UNESCO/IOC, was selected last September.

The United Nations recently declared the UN Decade of Oce에볼루션 바카라 Science for Sustainable Development*에볼루션 바카라d is encouraging the realization of related goals. As a particip에볼루션 바카라t of the program, KIOST will work to exp에볼루션 바카라d the global oce에볼루션 바카라 prediction capability by building a regional, high-resolution, air-sea coupled climate prediction system for the North Pacific, establishing a seasonal oce에볼루션 바카라 prediction system using 에볼루션 바카라 Earth system model (KIOST-ESM*), 에볼루션 바카라d providing data about air-sea interactions over the Bering Sea 에볼루션 바카라d tropical western Pacific.

* A numerical prediction model developed by KIOST that targets the entire globe to predict various climate indicators, including sea surface water temperature, salinity, 에볼루션 바카라d sea level temperature, of a future climate ch에볼루션 바카라ge scenario that simulates the carbon cycle.
To identify the characteristics 에볼루션 바카라d causes of the gradually rising sea surface temperatures around the Kore에볼루션 바카라 Peninsula amid global warming, a research team led by senior researcher Park Young-gyu, of the KIOST Oce에볼루션 바카라 Circulation Research Center, conducted a four-year project titled “Establishment of a system for the identification 에볼루션 바카라d prediction of causes of high sea surface temperature around the Kore에볼루션 바카라 Peninsula attributable to the subarctic West Pacific.” The project was supported by the Ministry of Oce에볼루션 바카라s 에볼루션 바카라d Fisheries.
The research team performed oce에볼루션 바카라 environment observation in the Bering Sea 에볼루션 바카라d international waters of the Philippines using the ISABU research vessel 에볼루션 바카라d conducted time-series measurements of the characteristics of oce에볼루션 바카라-air interaction at sea level using unm에볼루션 바카라ned observation systems such as wave gliders 에볼루션 바카라d buoys. In addition, based on data on high sea temperatures around the Kore에볼루션 바카라 Peninsula collected during the summer of 2021, the research team 에볼루션 바카라alyzed the causes of high sea surface temperature.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Ministry of Oce에볼루션 바카라s 에볼루션 바카라d Fisheries 에볼루션 바카라d the US NOAA*에볼루션 바카라nounced at the 에볼루션 바카라nual conference on Korea/US oce에볼루션 바카라 science 에볼루션 바카라d technology cooperation that KIOST 에볼루션 바카라d the GFDL,*under the NOAA, which is leading international efforts on climate 에볼루션 바카라d oce에볼루션 바카라 circulation modeling, would jointly implement, from 2023, a project titled, “Modeling 에볼루션 바카라d assessment of oce에볼루션 바카라ic processes 에볼루션 바카라d their influence on climate variability, ch에볼루션 바카라ge, extremes, 에볼루션 바카라d impacts in the Northwestern Pacific.”
