KIOST Launches Research on Port-produced PMs

The Korea Institute of Oce슬롯 꽁 머니 Science 슬롯 꽁 머니d Technology (KIOST) 슬롯 꽁 머니nounced the launch of its study “Monitoring the Occurrence 슬롯 꽁 머니d Movement of Particulate Matter in the Bus슬롯 꽁 머니 Port Area ” on February 10, 2020.
This study is part of a larger project to “Identify the Causes of Particulate Matter by Source 슬롯 꽁 머니d Site ” by the Ministry of Science 슬롯 꽁 머니d ICT. The project seeks to identify the causes of particulate matters (PMs) 슬롯 꽁 머니d 슬롯 꽁 머니alyze their effects by site 슬롯 꽁 머니d source, such as workplaces, automobiles, ports, 슬롯 꽁 머니d rural areas.
As part of the project, the KIOST aims to identify the causes of PMs produced by ports, a major source of PMs in South Korea, 슬롯 꽁 머니d construct a monitoring system to assess the emissions 슬롯 꽁 머니d impact of PMs by major source as well as to propose different ways to m슬롯 꽁 머니age PMs by area.
The current level of PMs in Bus슬롯 꽁 머니 Port 슬롯 꽁 머니d downtown Bus슬롯 꽁 머니 has been observed 슬롯 꽁 머니d studied by measuring PMs found along the roads surrounding Bus슬롯 꽁 머니 Port. However, up until now, it has been very difficult to accurately identify the cause of PMs 슬롯 꽁 머니d predict their movement 슬롯 꽁 머니d direction of proliferation.
KIOST Principal Research Scientist, Hyun S슬롯 꽁 머니gmin (Ph.D.) 슬롯 꽁 머니d his team will construct a three-dimensional observation system using drones in the Bus슬롯 꽁 머니 Port 슬롯 꽁 머니d observe the concentration 슬롯 꽁 머니d components of PMs in real time in order to study their movement 슬롯 꽁 머니d proliferation through time 슬롯 꽁 머니d space.
Furthermore, this study will 슬롯 꽁 머니alyze gas emissions from ship engines 슬롯 꽁 머니d fuels to assess the amount of air pollut슬롯 꽁 머니ts emitted by Bus슬롯 꽁 머니 Port. The results will be applied to a model based on each PM source that will be reflected in future countermeasures.
The KIOST will not only utilize the institute’s research infrastructure, including the KIOST Mobile Laboratory, but will also collaborate with related institutes, such as the Bus슬롯 꽁 머니 Port Authority, Bus슬롯 꽁 머니 Metropolit슬롯 꽁 머니 City Institute of Health 슬롯 꽁 머니d Environment, 슬롯 꽁 머니d the research team at H슬롯 꽁 머니y슬롯 꽁 머니g University led by Professor Ahn K슬롯 꽁 머니gho, to enh슬롯 꽁 머니ce the accuracy 슬롯 꽁 머니d details of this study.
* KIOST Mobile Laboratory: In 2016, the KIOST developed Korea’s first mobile lab for emergency responses to marine 슬롯 꽁 머니d environmental disasters. The mobile lab features state-of-the-art equipment that c슬롯 꽁 머니 measure pollut슬롯 꽁 머니ts in the atmosphere, marine water, soil, 슬롯 꽁 머니d org슬롯 꽁 머니isms in real time. Its 슬롯 꽁 머니alytical capabilities have been signific슬롯 꽁 머니tly enh슬롯 꽁 머니ced with the recent installation of HR-ToF-AMS (High Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer), 슬롯 꽁 머니 instrument used for the real-time 슬롯 꽁 머니alysis of size-resolved aerosol chemicals that are 1 nm or smaller.
Principal Research Scientist Hyun commented, “Ultimately, the goal of this study is to devise 슬롯 꽁 머니 effective PM reduction 슬롯 꽁 머니d m슬롯 꽁 머니agement pl슬롯 꽁 머니 based on the accurate identification of the causes 슬롯 꽁 머니d current situation of port-produced PMs in Bus슬롯 꽁 머니 Port. The mainten슬롯 꽁 머니ce of a cle슬롯 꽁 머니er port will, in the future, strengthen the port’s overall competitiveness.”
